Loughs Agency Summer Activities 16 July 2020

For the Salmon Pack

Intro to Riverwatch At Home:

If you are anything like us, you will be missing spending time outside exploring wild places! We are still looking after the Loughs Agency’s Riverwatch Aquarium and we want to continue our educational work by bringing you a range of educational activities to help keep you and your little ones connected to nature and our waterways during these difficult times.

Our first pack covers the incredible life story of our native salmon, looking closely at their life cycle, migrations and the threats the face over their lifetime.

We have created a childrens pack and a parents answer and info pack. We want to encourage you to learn about one of the most important wild species found locally to you.”

For the Map Pack

“Getting children interested in map reading as a way of understanding the environment around them and how places relate to each other, is a valuable life skill to have. Having good spatial awareness can help with other aspects of education and life in general.

With this in mind we are delighted to release our second education pack. The pack uses stylized maps of the Foyle and Carlingford catchments which highlight points of interest and angling hot spots.

The MAP PACK is directed at the 7-10 age group and aims to improve the graphicacy and map reading skills of the children who take part. It contains lots of map related activities. As they work through the pack children will learn about map reading, creating symbols, cardinal direction, creating keys, grid referencing. They can test what they have learned by way of a number of comprehension activities and quizzes. There is even a section on how to create a compass in the wilderness!

Feel free to share the link and encourage people to upload their work using #RiverwatchAtHome.”
