Boost for Lagan Valley Birds

Endangered birds in the Lagan Valley Regional Park can look forward to some special treatment with the appointment of the RSPB's Nicole Robinson.

As Bird Conservation Officer for Lagan Valley, Nicole will be working with landowners, volunteers and other stakeholders in the Park to give a helping hand to the resident wildlife.

In 2006, an RSPB survey identified 12 birds in need of conservation along the banks and vicinity of the river Lagan between Stranmillis and Union Locks. These were the kingfisher, barn owl, spotted flycatcher, swift, linnet, tree sparrow, yellowhammer, skylark and reed bunting. An action plan was then written for each species to help them thrive.

Nicole will set the plan in motion by providing guidance, creating and distributing information packs, setting up workshops, and working with volunteers.   You can also keep up with new developments on the project through a blog run by RSPB volunteer Siobhan Dignan here: On the Lagan.
