IKEA waste disposal
IKEA has eliminated waste disposal costs across all its UK and Ireland stores and now recycles 85% of its waste. In doing so, the company has become cost–positive.
The company acheived this by using innovating ideas to reduce the cost of its waste management operations year–on–year to a point where it could become revenue–generating. Innovative moves included the introduction of new napkin dispensers in in–store cafés that allow customers to remove only one napkin at a time, which saved IKEA £50,000 per year and reduced napkin use in store by 40%.
The company was now looking beyond zero waste to ‘positive waste’ by taking back more waste than it generates through its operations.
